Gregory Crewdson is an American photographer and he photographs tableaux of American homes and neighborhoods. Gregory was born in park slope a neighborhood in Brooklyn. He depicts the most ordinary settings and people from driveways and living rooms to housewives, waitresses and janitors. He captured the eerie moments in between the droning everyday and the moment when people stop, realize and debate the absurd he exposes the collision of what the subjects want and what they really have. His portraits are exhibited and collected internationally all around the globe including in several exhibitions. The details in his images is meticulously planned and staged in particular the lighting. In some instances, extra lighting and special effects such as artificial rain or dry ice are used to enhance a natural moment of twilight and the effect of twilight is entirely artificially created. His photographs have become increasingly spectacular and complex to produce requiring dozens of assistants, hollywood style lighting and specially crafted stage sets. All the images propose twilight as a poetic condition and it is a metaphor for and backdrop to uncanny events that momentarily transport actors from the homeliness and security of their suburban context. He took pictures of birds, insects and mutilated body parts are presented in surreal yet mundane domestic settings. He turned away from brightly coloured close ups to black and white birds eye views of strange situations. His photographs have become increasingly spectacular and complex to produce photos that can reveal a sense of ghastly or sinister intentions behind the image as a whole.
"Photography is a love affair with life."
"My pictures must first be beautiful, but that beauty is not enough. I strive to convey an underlying edge of anxiety, of isolation, of fear."
My favourite picture
This picture was very attractive to me because it looked amusing and curious because the dark shadows from the windows that are on the walls was a really impressive idea because it looks like the girl woke up early and the sun is shining which made shadows to happen when you wake up in the morning. The dark shadows that are on the walls are artificial light as the shadows perfectly fit the image and there is light shown specifically in places that the artists wants to highlight. The girl creates a perpendicular angle as she is sitting up causing a vertical stance but the bed is horizontal which creates a ninety degree angle which creates a three dimension and make the picture look more detailed and a lot of work has gone into it. The top of the picture is very light but as you move down it starts to get darker and the contrast of the women laying down and the girl sitting up shows us the abstract positions that the artist has tried to show which add a different side of this image as a whole. Also there are very sharp lines that are noticeable in this picture for example one of the main being the squared windows that are reflected on to the light and these lines can appear to be dominate lines. As well as this the picture have a very dark colours because there aren't sense of colours and the photographer has used black colours which makes you think of a dull day and the girl is situated near the middle of the picture to make it look like a portrait.
