Bruce Gilden is a American street photographer and he is best known for his candid close up photographs of people on the streets using a flashgun. Growing up in Brooklyn with what he describes as a tough guy of a father Bruce developed a love of the streets and often called them his second home. However the love was more than just a simple connection but it was a creative fascination and it was the unique energy of the streets that mesmerized Bruce and a energy that can momentarily expose something inside people that generally stays hidden so Bruce made it his life career to capture those moments. His images of the homeless and of Japan’s mafia gangs strongly bypass the conventional visual cliches of Japanese culture and he got inspired to take pictures of the homeless by seeing so many on the streets and making people aware of it and that became his type of street photography. Another defining characteristic of his photography is his creative attraction to what he calls characters and he has been tracking them down all through his career.
